Dying hair at home?

k, my mom has dark brown, almost black hair. it is thick and course, it is also pretty oily. she wants to dye it reddish. she has been getting it done @ a hair salon 4 a while but realized that it is too expensive. she wants to get one of those home kits but doesnt want her hair to turn out purple or something. what brands are good? does anybody have any tips 4 this color hair and/or at-home hair dying in general? she is looking 4 a good product that isnt pricey!

First of all, she is probably going to have to bleach it first since a "reddish" color is going to be lighter than her natural hair color. One brand I would recommend is Garnier Fructis, I've used them before and it was great. Be careful though with picking out a color. The picture on the box can be decieving. Hold it up to her skin tone and compare it to lots of other colors, asking yourself which one looks better and what kind of undertones it has.

red is hard to do at home!! for a less expensive route, try a beauty school. students are observed by professionals and the cost is about the the same as buying 2 boxes of at home color.

i'd say like loreal or something like that swave and if you follow the directions then it will work just fine i use the stuff alot

Any loreal products are pretty good... and i think you should start off dying her hair dark red and then a lighter red, until you get the color you want. going from dark to light is a tiring process

anyway, loreal paris "preference" hair dye works great, and is cheap too.. less then $20

Loreal and garnier are very good. They pretty much match the color on the outside of the box. The only way you can really screw it up is leaving it on too long. Be sure she follows the directions VERBATIM that comes with the dye.

L'Oreal...I like Feria, but Preference is also very good, and the reddish colors are very nice. Today's at home products are of the same quality as those in salons. I had the same issue...having to color every 4-6 weeks for (gray) root growth and getting it done in a sslon were killing me financially. I have been coloring my hair at home for 10 years and I wouldn't go back to a salon. It may take two or three tries to find your perfect color, but it is worth it. The L'Oreal dye costs about $8.00, give or take. The exception to coloring at home is if you want to go more than a few shades lighter than your natural color...this must be done professionally because bleaching out of your original color may be necessary. I use Loreal Feria. I have been useing it for a while it is the only hairdye that doesn't dry out my hair. But everyones hair is different so all i could tell your mom to do is try to find the dye thats for your mom :) Good luck

She can call the salon that she normally gets her hair done at and just ask her style st what color her hair gets colored. Or she can select a semi-permanent hair color that is close to her color and see how it turns out, if she doesn't like it it will wash out within four to six Wash's. Once she finds one she likes she can get a box of the permanent stuff. I don't have a preference on what brand but I would say not to get the cheapy stuff but don't get the pricey stuff maybe somewhere in the middle.
