It could be a number of things, my dog did something similar to this and I took her to the vet and was told she had allergies (to fleas, grass, dust). So I had to take her once every 3 months to get an allergy shot. You should take you cat to the vet to find out what the problem is.

in addition to above... food allergies

particularly if you are on one of the foods sold in grocery store or wal mart

these foods have so much filler in them and things cats shouldnt even eat (CORN for example).. BHT, BHA are harmful chemicals, by-products are beaks feet and feathers...
