I would use a big amount of gel and a little hairspray. Hope this helps.

try some leave in conditioner when wet. also get a volumizing mousse (tressame makes one), put a marshmallow amount in palm and flip head over. start scrunching sections of your hair from the ends all the way up to the nape of your neck. work all around your hair with a gentle slow motion. This will ensure that any waves or culrs that form will not be ruffled out of proportion. flip hair over and let hair dry.

You may need a stronger mousse to hold the "scrunches".

Also, a texturizing product may help you out. A good one to try is got2b: shagged out. It's a texturizing liquid fiber that has a good holding quality to it. It's available at drug stores.

I feel that it helps if I use a lot of gel and scrunch my hair when it's still pretty wet--almost soaking but a little bit towel dried. The longer I wait to put the gel in the and scrunch, the worse the outcome!

use a diffuser!!! It's that big funny lookin thing that goes on the end of your blow dryer that you've probably throw out cuz it had no use. Well its for creating defined natural looking curls. When your hair is wet, add de-frizzer/shiner, then maybe a bit of mouse or gel. then you just use that thing buy holding it in one spot til it dries

Try spraying your wet hair with Abba's Instant Recall, available from most beauty supply or salons, then flip your head over and dry with a diffuser on your blow dryer. Gently push up from the bottom of your hair and hold for a few seconds. You may also use a bit of gel, I like Laminates concentrated gel, and a bit of Biosilk on the ends. When hair is dry, do not play with it or brush. Good Luck!
